The Darwin Gate, Shrewsbury’s first new public sculpture since 1897, was unveiled by the Mayor of Shrewsbury & Atcham, Cllr Miles Kenny, at 6.30 pm on Wednesday 24th November following a candlelit procession through the town.
Designed by The Renn & Thacker Partnership, the artwork features three structures which, when viewed from the right angle, appear like a solid architectural feature.
It stretches seven metres into the sky and is flanked by four sandstone seats weighing six tonnes in total.
The sculpture is dedicated to Shrewsbury’s most famous son, biologist Charles Darwin, and is situated on the site of one of the town’s medieval walls.
