In September 2003, the Renn & Thacker
Partnership LLP entered a national competition to design
a sculpture for the site of the new Ikea warehouse in
Peterborough. The partnership's entry "A Spire"
won the competition.
"A Spire", like all of the sculpture by the
partnership, is site specific. Renn & Thacker
noted that the flat Cambridgeshire landscape is mainly
featureless apart from the occasional church spire.
The importance of such vertical structures in aiding
orientation and linking the sky to the landscape was
also a factor in the design of the artwork.
